A Note About The Counseling Process:
Although the extent and seriousness of educational preparation and
professional recognition by peers and governmental agencies are
significant factors for consideration, it is important to understand
that these alone do not make a person a good counselor or therapist.
There are well over 500 diverse and distinctly "accepted" theoretical
schools of thought about how to approach counseling and psychotherapy.
Counseling is not a pure science. It is a daunting task to find a good
professional who can help at a time of overwhelming need. Complicating
this, is the issue of cost and the place insurance coverage plays in the
process of this decision-making.
It turns out that education,
certifications, licenses, and professional recognition are not the
statistically important factors you would think them to be when it comes
to successful counseling and psychotherapy. Research has shown the
following factors are the most significant things that impact the
outcome of therapy and counseling. First and foremost is the genuineness
of the caring attention exhibited by the counselor to the client's
concerns, the ability of the counselor to appropriately perceive both
the specific and the wider issues and factors impacting the client, and
the trust developed between counselor and client. Next in importance is
the methodology the counselor uses and how well this is shared with the one receiving the counsel The final key to success is how well the one being counseled
investigates, explores and, where appropriate, implements what is being
discovered in therapy.
The counselor is primarily a professional
catalyst for personal exploration, encouragement and the experiencing of
emancipation. The counselor's job is to find and sow important seeds
for directed change. Further testing, care and nurturing is then carried
out by the one being counseled, while the counselor encourages and
oversees the process. It is God, we believe, however, Who brings the
increase! Professional credentials, although very important, are not to
be taken as the sole basis for why you choose to seek out a particular
counselor or therapist. Always seek God's direction as to whom is best
for you to entrust these sacred issues of life, happiness and personal
freedom. In most cases, you should be able to discern this in a matter
of three or four sessions.
